Preparing Your Home For The Heating Season

Fall is here! Now is the time to ensure your home’s heating system is ready for the cold weather ahead. By following these steps you can ensure your home stays warm and safe without unexpected heating breakdowns.
1. Schedule your annual furnace system tune-up. Like your car your gas furnace needs regular maintenance to help it operate efficiently and reliably all winter long.
2. Replace your furnace air filter. A dirty air filter not only makes the air in your home less healthy it can reduce the efficiency of your heating system and shorten the life of your furnace. If the filter looks dirty or is more than a month old it should be replaced.
3. Flush your water heater tank. Over time sediment can accumulate in the tank and gradually reduce heating efficiency.
4. Clean and cover your air conditioner. Clean debris off the air conditioner and cover the unit.
5. Check your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Replace the batteries at least once annually.
6. Seal air leaks around windows and doors.
7. Add insulation to your attic.
